Body Shaming on Buses

Recently the mayor of London banned ads  that he believes leads to body shaming of women and I want to know your thoughts!

Adverts which put Londoners under pressure over body image are to be banned from the Tube and bus network.

Sadiq Khan announced that Transport for London would no longer run ads which could cause body confidence issues, particularly among young people…”

What do you think? Should ads like this be banned? Is it unrealistic? 
Most of my friends growing up could eat anything they wanted and stay this thin. I never could and have always had body image issues, mostly because I always wanted to be a leading lady on screen and every actress I looked up to had an amazing physique. Now we see more and more leading ladies in all shapes and sizes.

I wasn’t as active as my friends either. I quit all sports, besides tennis, by my senior year in high school. That’s where I went wrong…unhealthy eating habits and inactivity. When I went to college it became even worse, with the introduction of alcohol and a fast food and cafeteria diet. My first job was at a gym and that’s when fitness came into my life. However, not much changed because I still wasn’t putting the right foods into my body. I also had deeper seated issues that I wasn’t addressing. In my opinion, anyone who has a problem with someone else usually has a problem within themselves that they aren’t considering. I always made a subliminal choice to struggle with my body because I was struggling with so much else emotionally.

Anyway, enough about me. Let’s get to the meat of the topic.

I honestly don’t care what the ad looks like and who is on it. This girl looks young and healthy in my opinion and it doesn’t look like she’s had any weight issues she has had to struggle with at all. She doesn’t have muscle tone either. I could be wrong, but she probably won’t have any issues until she’s in her 30’s or 40’s when her metabolism slows and her hormones change. I don’t think it was the best casting for the brand, but that was their decision. 

I think this ad is unrealistic because anyone that needs to lose weight must have a healthy lifestyle, that includes being active and eating healthy. A pill/protein advertisement for weight loss is unrealistic. In my opinion, that is where the issue is. There is no magic pill and no magic protein shake. Of course you can use supplements if you aren’t getting all the nutrients you need in your diet, but people need to be educated about that. I think if the marketing team showed care in that respect, that their dollars would make a much larger impact. Even in the video on their website, the girls are talking about losing weight due to the products. No where is there a mention of exercise or eating healthy. What’s funny is these girls have more realistic body types then the girl they chose for the ad. 

I think the mayor is making a big stance in getting rid of these advertisements, but I think there is more to it than the model that was chosen.

If he seriously is concerned that women will have body image issues because of this, then he needs to address the bigger picture. This company is still going to advertise their products as the magic key to weight loss with or without a model like this. 

It also leads to the overall plague that’s taking over our world. The hypersensitivity that people have towards this kind of thing is outrageous. Maybe you think I’m out of line. If you have such a huge issue with a silly advertisement, you probably have deeper issues within yourself that you need to work on. That’s just me being brutally honest. If you see something that bothers you, walk away from it and toward something that will make you happy! 

[Just as a side note, I do the Beachbody programs and yes, I drink a protein shake packed with nutrients as a supplement. Their programs are based on healthy lifestyles. They teach portion control and have tons of exercise programs. I do not condone just using a supplement to lose weight if you aren’t going to put in the work. Eat healthy and exercise and you will see a difference with or without these supplements.]

21 Day Fix – Day 21

I just want to start by wishing all of my mama readers a very happy Mother’s Day! Ihope, even if your children aren’t with you, that you are being celebrated. I believe children learn the most from their parents, and moms in particular, are a guiding light. I’ve learned all of life’s most important lessons from my mom and she’s the best example of the type of person I want to be. She never speaks negatively of anyone except for this one guy on a commercial that comes on all of the time (Who knows how he got cast). She always looks at things objectively, she gives more than she receives, she forgives, loves wholly, helps those who have less and those who have more, and treats everyone as equals. She’s understanding, she listens, she smiles at strangers because she wants them to smile, she’s empathetic, kind, smart, beautiful, strong, resilient, and wishes the best for everyone. She never gives up on me when I feel like giving up on myself and that’s what makes me keep going at the end of the day. I have no idea how I got so extremely lucky. I could say all of the same for my dad (but it’s Mother’s Day!). In my opinion both of my parents are as close to perfect as you can possibly be. Mother’s you are your child’s blessing, just as they are yours.Through my mother I see, and I know Gods love. If I become a mother I hope I can somehow compare. Thank you mom!!

Yesterday was so fun and busy that I was too exhausted to blog last night. You didn’t miss much though. The day started off pretty well with my workout and healthy breakfast but moving on from there it all went downhill. I’m not upset about it though. I knew what my choices were and I knew I was going to have to make up for it afterwards. 

My boyfriend and I hung out with my parents all weekend and went to the Blind Willie Blues Festival in Thomson, GA. I’ll be posting a video of it on my TownieGirl YouTube channel, so if you’re interested please subscribe and you’ll get an update when I post it this week. It was a lot of fun! It’s such a great annual event and this is the second time we have been. I highly recommend it! I had a few beers and snacked on treats pretty much all day. When we went for dinner I got a perfect juicy hamburger and I enjoyed every bit of it. My belly wasn’t really thanking me, but my tastebuds were.


Today I woke up and ate some fruit then took my boyfriend to the airport. I’m still out of town so checked in to a hotel, got some healthy groceries, and got my yoga in. Plus I did one of the workouts from the 22 minute hardcore series. It worked me! This is the last day of the 21 day fix for me and I’ll be posting my results on Tuesday when I’m finally home and have access to the tape measure. That doesn’t mean I’m stopping. I’m starting over again tomorrow! This week I’m going to learn more about what it takes to be a coach so you’ll get new updates on that as well. 21 Day Fix – Day 12

 TGIF! This morning I woke up bright and early, put the coffee on, checked my email (I doubt anyone is looking for a response at 6:30, but I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss anything critical last night), and put today’s workout on my ipad. So Far + So Good = Great Friday.

Today is going to be short and sweet because I ain’t got time fa dis!

The Workout:

Cardio Fix – I have no idea why I was looking forward to this today because I totally struggled with it and it kicked my A$$!!! I made it through though with no blood, but lots of sweat and tears….or maybe I just mistook the extra sweat for tears. I don’t know. Cardio is your frenemy. It puts a beat down on you but fights your fat cells at the same time. Damn cardio.

Today’s Eats:

Breakfast:

(1/2 red, 1/2 green, 1/2 yellow)

  • One over easy egg over broccoli and mushrooms
  • Black Beans

Lunch:

(1 green, 1.5 reds)

  • Turkey Unwich with onion, jalape├▒os, sprouts, & mustard

So today I made plans with my friend Karin because I’m working in Jacksonville and we haven’t seen eachother in forever. I told her we needed to find something healthy which is terribly hard among all of the restaurants downtown. You just never really know what chef’s are adding to things to make them taste good, and I don’t want to be that girl that customizes everything. We ended up going to Jimmy Johns because I could get an unwich there. I know iceburg lettuce is basically water and doesn’t count as one of our veggies, but I’m counting that along with the other items as my veggie. So I guess I did customize this but it’s not like I asked for it to be rolled up in spinach leaves that they didn’t have. 

Snack:

(1 green, 1 purple)

  • San Marco Elixer (apple, carrot, celery, parsley, beets, ginger, garlic)

Right after I met with one of my favorite customers I felt super hungry and didn’t have anything with me. Luckily Pulp was right across the street. Pulp in Jacksonville is one of my favorite juice bars. I wish there were one of these everywhere. Other places, it’s harder to come up with something with no added sugar, but lately I’ve been accommodated for. I love to add beets into my juice! one of my favorite smoothies here is Good Morning Granola. I’d have that every time if I could! 

Dinner:

(2 greens, 1 purple, 2 oranges, 1 red, 2 yellow)

  • Asian salad
  • One beer
  • One glass of red wine

Sooooo I kind of cheated tonight. I didn’t mean to! We went to watch an improv show across from our building and then saw that this place down the street was having a soft opening. We have been waiting for it to open so wanted to go check it out. I ended up having a glass of wine at Hourglass Pub and an Asian Salad at Elements Bistro. I was only going to have a taste of it and then ate almost all of it. It could have been worse. I think the only thing that made it a real cheat meal was the dressing it was tossed in because it had a sweetness to it. The tuna was amazing! By the way, I’m totally guessing at the container amounts


We went back to the pub afterwards where we caught an awesome blues band and…I had a beer…

Hopefully that will tease my body a little and won’t affect my fix. I doubt that it will. It’s not like I had a burger and fries and sometimes your taste buds need to have a little bit of fun!

21 Day Fix – Day 11

This morning I woke up bright and early and started the day. It’s Thursday, and for some reason I’ve always liked Thursdays. I mean, it’s no Friday, but it’s still a pretty good day. I woke up on the right side of the bed with happiness in my heart. I think those endorphins are really kicking it, because I’m like happy and I want to exercise and I think it’s always beautiful outside even when it’s not. They should really create an endorphin pill for people who won’t ever exercise because then people wouldn’t complain as much. If I had loads of money I would do the research and create it myself, but now someone is just going to steal my idea like always. It’s okay though, if I can spread the happiness, then I’m all for whichever robber is stalking my idea cupboard. I know some people use cocaine, but that’s just not good for you!

 I knew today was going to be a great day and it was! Mostly because I received a box at the end of the day from one of my fabulous vendors and it was literally a box of money plus a couple of dope items from their collection of Freakers and Freaker Feet. See below for pics!

The Workout:

Pilates – Another great Pilates session for the books. I really felt like I needed to do a little cardio today even though I was sweating during this session. I just added a little more to the end of my workout by doing some jacks, weighted walking lunges, push-ups, and more planks. I probably could have done another workout but didn’t have very much time today. Is it crazy that I’m looking forward to cardio fix tomorrow? 

Tonight we went to Everbank Field for the NFL Draft picks. We live right by he stadium but it’s a good half mile, so we had a nice little walk to and from tonight. Plus our first pick was  Jalen Ramsey from FSU! #GoNoles

Today’s Eats:

Breakfast:

(1 1/2 red, 1/2 blue, 1/2 green)

  • Broccoli, mushroom, onion fritata with shredded cheddar

Fritatas are definitely my new favorite. I’m running out of hot sauce plus a bunch of other stuff so I’m going to have to find time to go to the grocery this weekend.

Lunch:

(1 red, 1/2 yellow, 1/2 green, 1 orange)

  • Salad with baked chicken
  • 21 day fix dressing (1/2 orange)
  • Walnuts (1/2 orange)

We had chicken left over from a few nights ago that was still good, so I ate that on top of some Romaine lettuce with the dressing and nuts.

Snack:

(1 1/2 green, 1 purple)

  • Green smoothie with berries

I really look forward to my afternoon smoothie. Next week I’ll be in some small Ga towns so I doubt that I’ll be able to find a way to get one for a snack.

Dinner:

(1 1/2 red, 1 yellow)

  • Turkey meatloaf

I knew that if I didn’t have dinner made tonight that I wouldn’t be able to make healthy choices. I had prepared a meatloaf of the leftover turkey sausage and ground turkey so popped that in the oven when I got home. Otherwise I would have had to find a food truck or concession at the stadium and would probably not have gotten anything fix approved. Among all of the beer drinkers I felt a little lonely, so I had a glass of wine for my carb substitute. I think you can do that a couple of times a week. I also had my two tsp of almond butter when I got home. Can’t let a tsp go to waste! Now we have leftov meatloaf for tomorrow which I’m excited about because we are running out of food. Guess I can always revert to canned tuna if need be! Duh!
